I have been doing some research about the pier in Seal Beach.  The First Pier was built-in 1906 and was 6 feet wide and 1865 feet in length and was the longest pier south of San Francisco.

In 1915 no one was allowed at the end of the pier because there was a high voltage light show at the end of the pier.

In 1935 a storm broke the pier in half and they had to use Bosun’s chair by the Coast Guard to get the people off the end.  Because of the great depression the pier wasn’t repaired until 1939.

In 1983 120 ft of the Pier was destroyed by a storm and the residents of Seal Beach raised $130,000 to repair the pier.  The is when Slick the Seal took up residence after the pier was repaired.

In 1992 a short in the electrical wiring under the pier resulted in severe fire damage.  Because of potential fire danger the city council prohibited smoking on the pier.

I found this old picture of what the pier looked like in the 1920’s.  It is a lot different now.  One of my favorite things to do in Seal Beach is to take a walk on the pier and watch the sunset. old pictures of Seal Beach4 big

They are also doing a "Vendor Village" that starts at 3:00 p.m. This year it is every Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. Starting July 7 , the last concert is Wednesday, August 1, with the Elm Street Band. I wanted to add some more thoughts and results from our last summer concert on the 20th.

What a great time I had at the last summer concert.  I even won the 50/50 drawing.  It was the biggest crowd I ever seen there.  The weather was perfect and still warm even after the concert was over.  Maybe you can find yourselves in some of the pictures I took.  The concerts will return next summer and I am sure they will be just as fun.  I will keep you posted.

My friend (everyone selling me a winning ticket is my friend)

The 2008 Seal Beach summer concert series ended with a surfing concert by the Eliminators.  A ocean front community and the Beach Boys (and the Ventures, Dick Dale, and other surf guitars) are just made for each other.  It was a fun concert.

The Eliminators are a great concert group.  They have fun and that just eminates through their guitars and drums.  Even Miss Teen Seal Beach enjoyed herself a few feet from the performers dancing with a group of her friends.

Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce and other sponsors for putting the 2008 concert series together.  2009 cannot come quickly enough.

For fans of the Eliminators, we overheard one of them mention to a concertgoer that they are going to be appear at the Bella Terra mall in Huntington Beach during the Labor Day weekend.

Next Wednesday, August 20th is the last summer concert in Seal Beach.  The Eliminators, a popular Surf Band will be playing from 6:00 to 8:00.  Hope to see you there.

You can find out more about the Eliminators at www.theeliminators.com

Elm Street Band entertaining crowds in Seal Beach

It was a fun concert tonight at the Seal Beach pier with the Elm Street Band.  They played a lot of old fun rock songs – you know Mustang Sally, Woolly Boolly, Wipe Out – and everyone enjoyed the evening.  The Band featured California songs like California Dreaming, Hotel California, California Girls, and California Sun.

It was all punctuated by the surf anthem – Surfing USA.

Everyone had fun.  It was the largest crowd of the concert season so far.  And it had the largest raffle.

There’s only more concert left this year.  So mark the date – August 20.  Don’t miss it!

I just wanted to remind everyone that there are only two more concerts in the 2008 Seal Beach summer concert series.  if you enjoy classic rock and surf sounds, then these two shows will be for you!

The third concert in this series of six concerts was enjoyed by a large crowd in Seal Beach this evening.  The Regular Guys played with gusto – even inviting the event organizer to join them for the closing song of the first set.  I would guess that the crowd was larger tonight than for the earlier two concerts.

The chamber hasn’t announced any attendance that I’m aware of, but with the cool coastal breeze in the evening, it’s no wonder that folks enjoy the park setting, eating their meals while being entertained.  During the break (I never win raffles anyway), I walked across the street to Bogarts (one of the coffee houses in town).

I’m already looking forward to the remaining concerts in this year’s series.  Next week will be rockabilly and blues, then classic rock, then surf to conclude the series.
