February 2009

Several months ago, I posted an entry about Colbie Caillat filming a video here in Seal Beach.  Although I looked on her website several times, I never saw a video with images of our pier and town.   One of the WebCubic people suggested that it might be at posted on YouTube.

They were right!

Here’s a link to YouTube and enjoy the video.  http://tinyurl.com/ccjlt7

Her video is named “You” and the music is fantastic.  You’ll watch it more than once – maybe because of the images of our home town, but I think more for the music.  Colbie is wonderful!

Here’s another link that will interest you – it’s about the making of the “You” video.  See http://tinyurl.com/5qk55g

At sunset today you will see a brilliant Venus appear to touch the darkened upper right limb of the crescent moon.

Bogart’s Coffee House at 905 Ocean Avenue in Seal Beach will hold a public star-gazing party on the lawn across the street from the shop starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday. You’ll get another look at the Venus-Moon conjunction mentioned above.

One of our favorite statistical summaries ( www.dqnews.com ) released its January sales results.  Southland prices were up over the previous year for the seventh consecutive month.  Bulk of this is attributed to foreclosures.

In Seal Beach (zip code 90740), the median sales price was $674K, down over 15% from December.   The average price per square foot was $375 – up a little from the previous month’s $362.

The adjoining area of Belmont Shore (zip code 90803) saw that its median sales price was $760K, up almost 9.5%.  The average per square foot was $438 – down from last month’s $515.

I have a list of some months in 2008 for comparison purposes.  You can view it on my website at www.pathaleonline.com.

I wanted to remind all of you that daylight savings time starts Sunday morning March 8.   It is easier for some to remember that this is Saturday night.

What do we do with the clock?  Just remember the expression “Spring AHEAD, Fall BACK“.  On March 8 set your clocks one hour ahead.  Yes, this does mean that you will lose one hours sleep.  But the day will seem so much longer.  Sunset won’t be at 5:45 pm or thereabouts but it will be at 6:45 pm.

One of the people that help me with gas prices mentioned that he saw the two stations at Seal Beach Blvd and Westminster had actually dropped their prices this week.  Earlier both the Chevron and Union 76 stations showed $2.53 for the premium gas.  Thursday the price was $2.49.

We’re not sure that this is the start of a new trend, but it is refreshing.

The Orange County Register posted a summary of price changes and transactions as reported by DataQuick.  Take a look at http://tinyurl.com/a9pgks to see the full list of the 83 zip codes in Orange County.

Seal Beach (zip code 90740) showed an increase of 44.8% in median sales price over one year ago (year-over-year).  This was the higher percentage gain in the county.  However it also showed a 20% drop in the number of sales.

Surf City (aka Huntington Beach) will host the Power Balance pro-am volleyball tournament that kicks off on February 21.  The tournament features well known names in the world of beach volleyball.   Here is your opportunity to play with the pros.
